Before offering feeder mice to your snake, it’s important to make sure you’ve chosen the correct size. Ultimately, the size of the mouse you need depends on the size of the snake you are feeding. When selecting the appropriate size of frozen mice for your snake, start by choosing the size that shares the same circumference as the thickest part of the snake’s body.

If you’re unclear as to what size is most appropriate for your snake, our experts recommend selecting a size too small as opposed to a size that is too large. This will help prevent your snake from regurgitating the mouse.

Safe Thawing Methods

- Warm Water Submersion (Fastest/Best): Place the mouse in a sealed plastic bag to keep it dry and prevent scent loss. Submerge this bag in a container filled with hot water (100−110∘F100 minus 110 raised to the composed with power F100−110∘F or roughly 38−43∘C38 minus 43 raised to the composed with power C38−43∘C) for 15–20 minutes.
- Refrigerator (Safest for Hygiene): Move the mouse from the freezer to the refrigerator 24 hours before feeding, then warm it in warm water just before serving.

Crucial Tips

NEVER use a microwave: Microwaving creates hot spots that can burn the snake or explode the mouse, and it cooks the carcass, making it unappealing.
Verify Warmth: Ensure the mouse is fully thawed and warm to the touch (approx. 36−37∘C36 minus 37 raised to the composed with power C 36−37∘C or 98∘F98 raised to the composed with power F 98∘F) to mimic live prey, which helps with feeding
Use Tongs: Always use feeding tongs to present the prey, ensuring safety for both you and the snake.
Safety Check: If the mouse is still frozen in the center, replace the water with fresh hot water and continue soaking.
