Considerations for Use
Hygiene: The main drawback is that it can harbor bacteria if not cleaned frequently and thoroughly. Have two pieces so one can be cleaned and dried while the other is in the enclosure.
Cleaning: Dry waste can be vacuumed or spot-cleaned. The entire mat needs to be removed regularly for a deep clean, which may involve hosing it down, soaking it in a pet-safe disinfectant like F10, and drying it completely in the sun.
Ingestion Risk: Some reptiles, especially bearded dragons and tortoises, may try to eat the artificial grass, which could lead to impaction. It is important to monitor your pet’s behavior. Using cage carpet designed specifically for reptiles, such as the Zoo Med Eco Carpet, can mitigate this risk as the fibres are less likely to be ingested.
Reptile Type: It is generally more suitable for desert species that require low humidity, such as leopard geckos, certain snakes (like cornsnakes), and adult bearded dragons. For tropical species requiring high humidity, natural substrates like coconut fibre or cypress mulch are better at retaining moisture without molding.
